Everest Base Camp Trek
Region : Nepal

Grade : Difficult
Max Altitude : 18,200 Ft/5,550m
Trekking Km : 110 km
Introduction :
In the year 1924 when George Mallory first attempted to climb Mount Everest, he might not had a single clue that his passion is going to drag thousands to crazy trekker to this barren land of snow, rocks and wind. However people all over the world flying to this tiny country called Nepal, with their heavy backpacks and mountain gears. And I am one of them who finally decided to be part of legacy of being the visitor to the great Mount Everest Base Camp (henceforth called EBC).
Once a reporter asked George Mallory : “Why to Climb Mount Everest”
An legendary reply by Mallory : “Because, It’s There”
The Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most famous Trek in Nepal, which is famous for its fantastic mountain peaks and the beauty on the hills. Most of the places to this spot go through ridges and trails, but you would have ample space to rest and have meal on your way. And one of the best things about this place is that you don’t have to worry about being lost, as you can ask anybody for the next village.
You can come to this destination all around the year as people trek in all seasons; however the best time to come to this area is between March to mid may and between Septembers to mid November. Many people do not prefer coming here in winters as the weather is very cold and the snow all around may make your trekking experience difficult.
Most of the lodges and restaurants in the Khumbu region only accept the Nepalese currency. The price would increase for these amenities as you go to higher altitudes. Different items have different charges according to the availability and product. Firstly, you must carry water-purifying drugs which can be found n Kathmandu. This would help in treating your own water bottles which you can fill from nearby lakes and rivers. It would also save your money on buying new water bottles every time.
Preparation :
The foremost and important preparation is to prepare our body, need to start exercising at least 3 months prior to the dates of trek. I suggest 3 months considering all our excuses of laziness, weekend parties, workload, injuries, travelling, etc. Though I started it 6 months before but I think the effecting days of exercising trims down to nearly 30 days. I hope you people are more dedicated than me. I was mainly concentrated on cardio, running and trekking (once in a month). One has to increase the intensity of workout on regular basis, make sure at near the trek day you should be able to run 10km comfortably in an hour.
It says “Shoes tell the personality of a person”, at Everest Base Camp it decides the fate of trekker. It is very important to have a good hiking boots, water resistance, hard sole, cushion inside and most important used for at least 2 to 3 months. Broken in boots are essential otherwise it will give you with nasty blisters on your feet. Ankle length is mandatory to avoid injuries due to twist while on rocky terrain.
Permits :
To enter in Nepal, passport is mandatory, for trekking in Khumbhu region, one can get the permits on the way while trekking. Permits are issued at Monjo @ the fees of NPR 1500/-, Indian only needs to produce passport to obtain permit. For foreign nationals other than Indian, TIMS card is mandatory.

Rain/Snowfall is common and varies one trek to another in different seasons. Apart from the above, everybody have some different needs and choices of his own, so add them to the list. Remember to take medicines, if you are taking any on regular basis. Actually, on trek, the foremost task is not looks but ‘to protect yourself’ from weather, fatigue, HAS, cramps etc.
In our opinion, after getting introduced, it is only you who peep upon yourself, nobody else. And then, it is not the branded or costlier stuff you wear, rather your will to help others, behavior and attitude towards your fellow trekkers, which makes a mark upon the group.
It is well said by one trekker “The dirtiest trekker is the best Trekker”. So stick to the basics, Leave fashion and carry the rucksack as lighter as you can. It would not be more than 5 Kg ideally, and in case you think that you would hire a porter, it will cost about approx Rs. 500-700 per day. Again, choice is yours.
