Roopkund (locally known as Mystery Lake) is a high altitude glacier lake in Uttarakhand state of India, It lies in the lap of Trishul massif and famous due to hundreds of ancient human skeletons found at the edge of the lake. The lake is located at an altitude of about 16,470 feet (5020Mtr). The human skeletal remains are visible at its bottom when the snow melts. Research generally points to a semi-legendary event where a group of people was killed in a sudden, violent hailstorm in the 9th century. Because of the human remains, the lake has been called Skeleton Lake in recent times. It is surrounded by rock-strewn glaciers and snow mountains, making it a good trekking destination. The route leading to the lake passes through the twin Bugyals of Ali & Bedni. Our trail for the day is easier as compared to the entire trek and soon we get lost in the beauty of it. We trek through the forest following the Neel Ganga. The trail is initially easy which then starts to climb up steadily. As the trek continues, we get set into it and start negotiating the climb to Ali Bugiyal. After a good climb, we reach Didina. From Didina, Tolpani is a gradual 1 km ascent.

DAY 03 : Tolpani (8300 ft) to Bedni Bugyal (11700 ft) 6 Kms

We start early today to enjoy the best views. We will walk through twin meadows of Ali & Bedni. The trek is steep till we reach Ali Bugyal. From here the trail comprises of long sections of gradual ascent. The meadows are one of the best in the country as you will realize during your trek. As you are walking through the Ali Bugyal, Nanga Ghunti & Trishuli are prominently visible in the East. We trek on the marked trail. You will spot a small structure made from stones. It is a temple.Slightly to your right you can see a cluster of fibre huts green in colour. Find a suitable spot here for the packed lunch. Starting from the stone structure, a section of the trail ahead is uphill & in zig zag shape. After the lunch we commence trek and reach Bedni Bugyal Campsite by afternoon.

DAY 04 : Bedni Bugyal to Patar Nachauni (12700 ft) 6 Kms

The trek is short today and has been kept so for better acclimatization. We will commence the trek around 8 AM. Walk slow and steady as next campsite is not very far. There is only one steep climb as you leave camping site of Bedni Bugyal. After that there are sections of mild ascent till we reach Patar Nachauni, situated at the foot hill of the mountain at the top of which lies the temple of Kalua Vinayak.

DAY 05 : Patar Nachauni to Bhagwabasa (14200 ft) 4 Kms

Distance wise todays trek is not very long but it is one of the steepest section of the entire trek. Taking an early start always helps. You have to climb the mountain right in front of you to the top. The trek starts with a flat walk, followed by a steep ascent to kalua Vinayak which is a Temple. The view in Patar Nachauni is restricted by mountains. But once you reach Kalua Vinayak you get a panaromic view. Some of the prominent peaks visible from this point are Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Neelkantha, Trishul & Nanda Ghunti. From Kalua Vinayak, the trail is downhill upto Bhgwabasa camps. We reach Bhagwabasa camps by early afternoon. It is the highest campsite of this trek. The night is extremely cold here. Bhagwabasa is used as a base camp for trek to Roopkund lake.

Rain/Snowfall is common and varies one trek to another in different seasons. ALWAYS wrap your clothing / non waterproof stuff inside waterproof poly bag (polythene/plastic packet) while packing in your backpack. Plastic material is most efficient evil on mountain for waterproofing. Use additional waterproofing even if you have a rain cover for your backpack.

Apart from the above, everybody have some different needs and choices of his own, so add them to the list. Remember to take medicines, if you are taking any on regular basis. Actually, on trek, the foremost task is not looks but ‘to protect yourself’ from weather, fatigue, HAS, cramps etc.

In our opinion, after getting introduced, it is only you who peep upon yourself, nobody else. And then, it is not the branded or costlier stuff you wear, rather your will to help others, behavior and attitude towards your fellow trekkers, which makes a mark upon the group.

It is well said by one trekker “The dirtiest trekker is the best Trekker”. So stick to the basics, Leave fashion and carry the rucksack as lighter as you can. It would not be more than 5 Kg ideally, and in case you think that you would hire a porter, it will cost about approx Rs. 500-700 per day. Again, choice is yours.

P.S.: You may use and share common kit for toiletries and medicines if travelling in a group.
